Its a New Model 1863 that was produced as a percussion carbine and then after the war converted to 50-70 Govt. This one still has the original percussion inspection cartouches under the saddle ring bar and the conversion cartouche in the middle of the left side of the butt stock. It has the three groove liner and the bore is a nine out of ten. I have taken it hunting, but have not as yet shot it at any game. Congratulations on owning a fine specimen of Sharps history. I once owned a percussion carbine that was only 21 numbers from this one. Ive had this one since the mid-seventies. Paid 375.00 if memory serves. Of course I only made 500month back then. From 75 through 80 I was stationed in Suffolk County, Long Island, New York. The sand pit was a working sand quarry during the week and open to the public for shooting on the weekends. It was the only place you could shoot 200 yards on Long Island in those days. A individual named Wolfgang with a German accent had a percussion Sharps Carbine he was demonstrating. He passed out some literature and several people shot his Sharps. And so he did. Wolfgang fired several rounds from this conversion carbine. Sharps 1863 To 1874 Conversion How To Make ItI was shooting white powder in those days as I didnt know how to make it sing with black. If memory serves, Wolfgangs Sharps sold for the same 375.00 that I paid for this carbine and he was only offering percussion models at the time. And yes, you do know that you have pulled the trigger when you light up that candle. As for accuracy, its not a tack driver, but it does have minute of whitetail a 100 yards. ![]()
